Do you see when the rise in incarceration began in the United States? The United States has five percent of the world’s population but incarcerates 25% of the WHOLE WORLD’s prison population!
There are people serving life sentences for first time offenses for marijuana possession in the United States. These are non-violent first offenders sentenced to life by Mandatory Minimum Sentences. President Barack Obama and Eric Holder are working on changing this 40 year nightmare, which has disproportionately affected our Black American population and the poor population. Rich, white guys don’t go to prison. Just look at politician Trey Radel (click on his name to get the full, recent story). I really encourage you to click on politician Trey Radel’s short story to see how corrupt the whole “war on drugs” really is. This just proves my point that rich, influential white guys don’t go to prison!
I have looked at many statistics. I have looked at many studies. They all point to the same human-rights violations against Black Americans and the Poor. These people are suffering in prison! I’m not talking about violent offenders. The reality is, the majority of non-violent offenders are in prisons for drug related complications. They are being imprisoned for substance use or abuse. This is how we take care of these Americans in our country! It has to stop. We can no longer support these human rights violations. We can no longer imprison non-violent drug offenders. Some people really are doing life for a plant…marijuana. If you don’t believe me, click HERE FOR FACTS.
Today, President Obama and Attorney General :
As part of a new initiative, President Obama plans to step up the number of nonviolent drug officers he considers for clemency.
Mr. Obama with Attorney General Eric Holder by his side, “has asked the Justice Department to set up a process to ensure that anyone who has a good case for commutation has their application seen and evaluated,” White House spokesman Jay Carney said Monday.
So instead of strong education to prevent drug abuse, which does work for our future generations, we are spending more and more to incarcerate the minorities and the poor. What is going on here?
Colorado is planning on a 40,000,000.00 tax revenue infusion into the state’s education system out of the projected 100,000,000 million dollars in legal marijuana tax revenue this year. The legalization has actually decreased crime and is making a LOT of tax revenue for the state of Colorado without having to increase income taxes and burden the middle-class and poor even more. Sad fact! 49,000,000 Americans don’t know where their next meal will come from in the U.S.A. today! Paul Ryan’s budget plans to all but make the “takers” extinct in America and make the rich even richer and more powerful!
